The concept of transforming video games into film and television formats is hardly groundbreaking—in fact, it’s been happening for quite some time. We’ve witnessed an array of adaptations from video games manifest on both the big screen and streaming platforms, resulting in both rewarding achievements and unfortunate flops. As we look ahead, there are even more adaptations on the horizon, including ones for popular titles like BioShock, Gears of War, Mass Effect, and several others.
For a bit of entertainment, I’ve decided to take a moment to reflect and compile a list of the standout adaptations we’ve seen up to this point. Before the inevitable uproar ensues over “How can you rank this over that? Clearly, X is superior!” let me clarify: I wholeheartedly endorse every single work on this list. Gone are the days of settling for something merely decent. I’m sifting through the crème de la crème—the ones you absolutely must experience. Ready to dive in? Here are the top seven video game adaptations to date.
7. Dragon Age: Absolution
Originally intended as a game centered on heists, this concept eventually found new life in the 2022 Netflix series, Dragon Age: Absolution. The animated series follows a diverse group brought together to steal a formidable Tevinter artifact, offering an engaging perspective on another part of Thedas. Special mentions go to the delightful character Qwydion, voiced by Ashly Burch. It’s not without its limitations, however, as it offers a mere glimpse into the expansive world, potentially challenging for those new to the Dragon Age lore. Nevertheless, it’s a worthwhile watch for those intrigued by Templars, Blood Mages, and other supernatural elements.
6. Sonic the Hedgehog
It’s remarkable how a negative reaction to Sonic’s original movie design paved the way for one of the most enjoyable franchise adaptations ever created. The Sonic the Hedgehog movies, along with the Knuckles miniseries, bring the character’s lively essence to audiences in a captivating fashion. Delaying the first film to refine Sonic’s look was a brilliant move, yielding a character that closely mirrors his video game counterpart. Jim Carrey’s portrayal of Dr. Robotnik delivers consistent entertainment with his energetic shenanigans. As we look ahead to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, fans are eager to see Keanu Reeves lend his voice to the intriguing Shadow the Hedgehog.
5. The Last of Us
In collaboration with HBO, PlayStation Productions and Naughty Dog have brought The Last of Us to the screen, staying remarkably true to the essence of the original 2013 game. The narrative follows Joel and Ellie, played by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, as they journey across a post-apocalyptic America. While the series closely mirrors the game, it carves out unique moments, like the gripping opening featuring John Hannah as a concerned scientist and a deeply moving third episode exploring the lives of Bill and Frank. Looking ahead, the adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 is set to commence in 2025, with hints at more seasons delving into the story.
4. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
Studio Trigger’s collaboration with Cyberpunk delivers a true masterpiece with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. This prequel to Cyberpunk 2077 follows a street-smart kid and the jobs he undertakes with his crew—only to find themselves at odds with the formidable Arasaka corporation. The series perfectly sets you up for a thrilling ride, only to pull the rug out from under you with precision and emotional impact. It’s an unforgettable experience that epitomizes the dangers lurking within Night City.
3. Castlevania
Transforming Castlevania into an animated series could have gone wrong in countless ways, but Powerhouse Animation and Netflix achieved a masterpiece. The series, which chronicles the monster-hunting Belmonts over many years, brilliantly enhances character backstories and motivations. With its mature tone, sleek animation, captivating soundtrack, and stellar casting, Castlevania firmly establishes itself as a must-watch across all of its four seasons. Its successor, Castlevania: Nocturne, carries on the tale, set against the dramatic backdrop of the French Revolution.
2. Fallout
Many were skeptical when the Fallout TV series was first announced, myself included. However, the collaboration between Kilter Films, Amazon MGM Studios, and Bethesda has hit the mark, crafting a story in sync with the main games’ canon and presenting a darkly humorous portrayal of post-apocalyptic America. The plot centers on characters like Lucy, a vault dweller, and others, navigating factional power struggles in a volatile Wasteland. The show nails the balance of humor, gore, and hope, all while staying true to its roots. With a second season on the way, there’s a lot to anticipate.
1. Arcane
Riot Games and Fortiche spent years developing an animated narrative in the realm of League of Legends, and they achieved success with Arcane. The series explores profound dualities, such as Piltover versus Zaun and the dynamic between sisters Vi and Jinx. Stunning animation and a breathtaking soundtrack accompany a nuanced storyline centered around well-known Champions from Riot Games. Unlike other entries, Arcane requires no prior knowledge of the game, allowing viewers to immediately fall in love with the world of Runeterra. It’s a standout piece of art, unmatched by anything else on this list, and while Riot may explore more within Runeterra, another series like this is a rare gem.
