Samsung’s latest Unpacked event may not have been the stage for groundbreaking extended reality (XR) revelations, but it still delivered something noteworthy. The South Korean tech giant finally unveiled a near-final version of its much-anticipated Android XR headset, intriguingly dubbed Project Moohan.
Last month, I had the chance to try Moohan when Samsung held a special unveiling for this mixed reality device. The headset is built on the recently announced Android XR platform, promising an interesting play in the mixed reality space.
Many of us had high hopes for this year’s Unpacked, eagerly anticipating a deeper dive into Project Moohan. Would we catch a glimpse of the elusive controllers or get confirmations about its potential competition with products like Ray-Ban’s Meta Smart Glasses? Unfortunately, those details remain under wraps. Samsung showcased the refined version of Moohan, though it remained safely out of reach, just like during the exclusive hands-on sessions last month. For a visual sneak peek, The Verge captured some footage which you can check out in the video below.
Project Moohan pulls inspiration from big names like Meta Quest and Apple’s Vision Pro, incorporating design and software elements that include a sturdy strap, eye-tracking capabilities, pancake lenses, and a design focused on comfort. While it’s not quite on par with competitors like the Quest Pro in terms of field-of-view or lens quality, Moohan truly shines with its AI integration. Thanks to Google’s Gemini AI, this headset offers real-time contextual assistance, memory retention, and engaging immersive functionality, positioning it as a formidable force in the mixed reality arena.
We’re all waiting for Moohan to make its official debut later this year—hopefully with its own unique name. To delve deeper into what Project Moohan brings to the table, feel free to explore our detailed hands-on review, which offers insights ranging from hardware impressions to how it integrates the Android XR platform.
