Last year brought some thrilling news for fans of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) as Wizards of the Coast teamed up with Resolution Games to reveal a groundbreaking venture—the beloved tabletop RPG was moving into the virtual reality realm.
Up until this week, specifics about the anticipated game remained a mystery. But on Wednesday, the curtain was finally lifted, giving eager adventurers a sneak peek at the official game title and some juicy details about what’s in store.
Enter Battlemarked—the new game harnesses the power of Resolution Games’ Demeo system. This setup focuses on a virtual tabletop atmosphere, echoing D&D’s turn-based combat and incorporating a clever action point system with playing cards.
A noteworthy point about Battlemarked is that it marks the inaugural collaboration between Resolution Games and Wizards of the Coast. Fans can expect a distinctly D&D-esque adventure, arguably more authentic than Demeo. But there’s a twist: Battlemarked doesn’t need a Dungeon Master (DM). The idea is to shift the focus more towards strategic gameplay and decision-making, leaving the roleplaying aside.
When it launches, Battlemarked will feature two story-driven campaigns, offering a multiplayer experience for up to four players.
Gamers can look forward to exploring Battlemarked across multiple platforms, including VR, PC, and consoles. While the specifics of supported devices remain vague, it’s worth noting that Demeo is already available on Meta Quest, Pico, SteamVR, PlayStation VR2, PlayStation 5, PC, Mac, and iPad. Odds are that Battlemarked will follow the same path.
In tandem with this revelation, a fresh new trailer dropped, flaunting the art style—courtesy of Wizards of the Coast—that fans have grown to appreciate. It also teases some intriguing classes and races that’ll be part of the game, including a fighter Dragonborn and a rogue Tiefling, among others.
Still, several aspects of the new game remain shrouded in mystery. The launch date and pricing, along with campaign specifics, are yet to be disclosed. Resolution Games did, however, hint at future additional campaigns set in “different D&D settings,” though they opted not to delve into further details during our inquiry.
For a bit of context on the studio behind this venture, Resolution Games hails from Stockholm, Sweden, with a decade’s worth of gaming creations under its belt. Their repertoire includes titles like Angry Birds: Isle of Pigs, Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale, and Spatial Ops, among others, with around $38.6 million raised to date, based on PitchBook data.
This latest announcement is a testament to D&D’s surging popularity as it strides into the mainstream, further solidifying its multi-media franchise status. This expansion joins ranks with phenomena like the popular web series Critical Role and Dimension 20, video games such as Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3, and even the movie theater-bound “Honor Among Thieves.”
