Earlier this week, Steel Wool Studios dropped some exciting news for fans of the Five Nights at Freddy’s series. They announced that FNAF: Secret of the Mimic is landing on PlayStation 5 and PC on June 13th. However, there seems to be a bit of a mystery afoot, as the game was previously showcased on PSVR 2 but now, mentions of support for that platform have vanished.
For those who attended PAX West 2024, you might recall the game being part of a playable demo on the PSVR 2, giving us the impression that it was going to be a blend of virtual reality and traditional flat-screen gameplay. Steel Wool Studios, well known for their VR titles, received a significant boost from HTC back in 2016, which helped them create some popular VR-native games over the years, including titles like Hello Neighbor Search and Rescue and multiple installments in the Five Nights at Freddy’s Help Wanted series.
Following the buzz of their recent announcement, eagle-eyed fans noticed that any reference to PSVR 2 support has been wiped from the game’s marketing material. The PlayStation Store page for Secret of the Mimic, which previously hinted at this optional VR experience, has now been updated to exclude it entirely. Perhaps one of the last nods to PSVR 2 support was a now-deleted post from PlayStation, which had coincided with the release date announcement on February 12th.
As it stands, Steel Wool Studios hasn’t clarified whether PSVR 2 support will ever be a reality, nor have they shared if the PC versions aiming for platforms like the Epic Games Store and Steam will incorporate VR elements. We’re in touch with the studio and are keenly waiting for their response. As soon as we have detailed info on whether this indicates a delay or a completely different release tactic for the VR mode, we’ll update the community.
Diving into FNAF: Secret of the Mimic, players find themselves in the eerie and deserted halls of Murray’s Costume Manor, tasked with uncovering secrets left by the enigmatic inventor, Edwin Murray. According to the game’s narrative, the Mimic is an adaptive prototype endoskeleton, able to transform to fit any costume and embody any character, including ones that exploit your deepest fears.
You’ll be equipped with little more than your brainpower, some nifty gadgets, and a partly censored corporate dossier as you attempt to secure Fazbear’s coveted prototype tech. But be prepared to face obscure riddles and an unrelenting shadow determined to thwart any interlopers.
