Looks like the Daniel Kaluuya-led Barney the Dinosaur movie is revving up to welcome Ayo Edebiri, the star from The Bear, both in a starring role and a writing capacity. In this era where every intellectual property is getting a makeover, who would’ve thought Barney the Dinosaur would get another chance in the limelight? Since its announcement back in 2019, this project has caught quite a few eyebrows. Daniel Kaluuya’s production company, 59%, is teaming up with Mattel Films and Valparaiso Pictures to create a live-action twist on the iconic, colorful dinosaur. It’s been described as simultaneously “surrealistic” like an A24 film but also not too “odd”—an interesting mix. Well, as Variety has recently revealed, they’re finally bringing Ayo Edebiri on board as both an actress and writer for the film.
While her involvement as an actor is still in the negotiation stage, we are yet to have any juicy plot details about the project. However, Edebiri’s unique creativity seems perfectly suited for something as outlandish as this. There’s a lot of curiosity regarding what she’ll bring to the table. Kevin McKeon, an executive at Mattel Films, has mentioned that they are diving into the Millennial angst associated with Barney rather than aiming it directly at kids. It’s more about addressing adult themes rather than being R-rated, focusing on the 30-something experience and that sense of disillusionment that can come from growing up with Barney.
Surprisingly, this concept doesn’t sound half bad. If we take a page out of Barbie’s book—another Mattel venture that hit big by reimagining its beloved toy—there’s potential for Barney to do the same. Still, we have to see whether Barney has the broad appeal that Barbie does. My only worry? I genuinely hope the trailer doesn’t ruin it by including a slowed-down, somber version of the theme song. We all know that trend far too well, and it might be best left in the past!
