It seems Shawn Levy, the director of ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Wolverine,’ is set to helm a new Star Wars film, potentially starring Ryan Gosling. This movie marks a significant point as it will be the first story unfolding after the events of ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’ Given the polarizing reception of ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ it’s notable how no new films in the franchise were produced for nearly six years. And here we are, gearing up for a new wave of Star Wars adventures, although it’s been a slow journey to see them materialize.
In a recent conversation with Deadline, Lucasfilm’s president, Kathleen Kennedy, shared updates on various Star Wars film endeavors. Among them is Shawn Levy’s project, which seems to place Ryan Gosling in a prominent role. When questioned about Levy’s film, Kennedy mentioned she’s currently busy producing ‘The Mandalorian’ movie, with Levy’s film coming up next. This interview followed reports suggesting Kennedy might step down from her role later this year. Addressing these rumors, she passionately clarified, “Let me make it clear—I am not retiring. I’ll be making movies until I can’t anymore.”
Kennedy elaborated on the film’s timeline, specifying that Levy’s story will unfold a few years after ‘The Rise of Skywalker.’ “It’s all post the original nine movies,” she noted. It might bring back some characters from the sequel saga, but mostly, it’s set to introduce new faces. Fingers crossed it manages to leave ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ as a fleeting memory.
Interestingly, the interview didn’t touch upon the standalone Rey movie, which appears to be stuck in development limbo. Time will reveal its fate. Meanwhile, ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ is the only film with a set release date, set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026. It’s safe to say Kennedy and her team are eager to get more projects underway soon.
