The French voice actors for Apex Legends seem to have taken a firm stand against having their voices used to train artificial intelligence, declining to sign an agreement to that effect.
Pascale Chemin, the voice actress for Wraith in the French version of Apex Legends, shared on Twitter that a clause had been included in their contract by the publisher, likely Electronic Arts. This clause aimed to use their recorded voices to train AI models. While the specific game and publisher aren’t directly mentioned, all signs point towards Apex Legends and EA being involved.
Additionally, a group of 31 voice actors working on the project joined forces in rejecting the agreement, collectively addressing a letter to the publisher expressing their refusal.
In a post translated by ResetEra, Chemin emphasized the importance of their solidarity: “Now’s the time to stand together to ensure a clause safeguarding our voices is permanently embedded in our contracts—not just for us, but all video game dubbing studios. Failing to act now might spell disaster.”
She went on to highlight the present dilemma: “Refusing work today isn’t logical—many of us are already struggling to find jobs and make ends meet. Yes, securing a paycheck would be a relief. But what we’re being asked is more than just to work; it’s essentially to forfeit our expertise to aid in developing generative AI that could replace us in the future. It’s a request to betray our own trade, to undercut ourselves. It’s a plea for us to endorse AI.”
