Alta, the folks who crafted the enchanting world of A Township Tale in 2021, have been hard at work on their next venture, REAVE. This upcoming dungeon-crawler is shaping up to be an intriguing extraction game, and they’ve recently given us a peek at their progress. Although everything is still unfolding, the layers of the game, including a fresh dungeon and a new foe, are becoming clearer.
In their latest development update, which you can glimpse below, the team reveals several refreshed systems and game areas. Among these is the grand structure known as ‘The Fallen Bastion,’ the game’s most expansive room to date.
“We’re blending open spaces and tighter, more claustrophobic corridors,” explains Sean Ellis, the lead environment artist. “There are well-lit areas juxtaposed with pitch-black sections perfect for ambushes or stealthily evading enemies.”
At the heart of this fantastic space is a magical pedestal designed to summon boss battles. Currently, it’s being tested with a colossal spider boss.
Alta assures us, “This spider is just a temporary stand-in to help us fine-tune the dynamics of real boss encounters while we craft more permanent challenges.”
The studio is also implementing numerous tweaks and modifications to previously showcased areas. According to the dev log, some parts might even see full replacements as development progresses.
Images reveal new enemy models designed to take over from the placeholder skeletons, offering varied challenges depending on their gear and weaponry.
As an extraction-centric game, REAVE introduces an in-game currency known as ‘Echoes’—though that’s likely not its final name. Players can hoard this currency in a special vessel that accumulates over time.
Defeating enemies will release Echoes, but you’ll also find them scattered throughout the environment. This not only nudges players to explore and engage in combat but also allows them to use Echoes to unlock loot rooms. Additionally, these Echoes are essential for extracting from dungeons to return to the social hub, where you can trade your gathered treasures.
If you’re eager to be one of the game’s testers, consider joining their Discord community. Opportunities open up periodically with limited slots. While there are no release dates set in stone, the studio is focusing on compatibility with Quest 2 and above and PC VR headsets.
