nDreams, known for its arena shooter FRENZIES, has announced that the game will finally be leaving its early access phase later this year. However, in a surprising twist, it won’t be making its way to PSVR 2 as was originally expected.
In their official statement, nDreams expressed that while FRENZIES won’t see a release on PSVR 2, fans can look forward to other exciting announcements for the platform. They shared, “We’re thrilled to let everyone know that once FRENZIES steps out of Early Access later this year, it will be available as a free-to-play game! Since we launched in Early Access on Meta Quest, the feedback from players loving the game’s unique chaotic charm has been overwhelmingly positive. We want to build on that energy as we transition from Early Access.”
“To ensure we deliver the best version of FRENZIES possible, we’ve made the hard choice to focus exclusively on the Meta Quest release, putting a hold on the PSVR 2 version. We understand this might be disappointing for those eagerly waiting for a PSVR 2 release, but stay tuned as we have more exciting PSVR 2 news coming soon!”
FRENZIES initially launched into Early Access on Quest 2 and higher back in October 2024. The game offers a fast-paced shooting experience with a variety of weapons and modes, all crafted into a robust VR-native package.
For PlayStation VR 2 enthusiasts, this might be a letdown, but there’s solid reasoning behind the decision. Over the last year, Quest has gained popularity among younger users, especially with the introduction of the $300 Quest 3S, which has simultaneously increased the demand for free-to-play content.
Samantha Ryan, Meta’s VP of Metaverse Content, highlighted this shift by stating in February, “We’re expecting free-to-play to be a broadly viable strategy for developers, who until now have mostly relied on premium apps. But we believe F2P and premium apps will both thrive.”
Moreover, navigating the current challenging economic landscape likely influenced nDreams’ strategy. Focusing on their largest player base could maximize returns. This UK-based studio has also recently combined its nDreams Studio Orbital and nDreams Studio into a new entity called ‘Compass’ following some staff reductions.
As veterans in the XR game development space, nDreams boasts an impressive portfolio with titles like Vendetta Forever, Power Wash Simulator VR, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, Synapse, Fracked, Little Cities, and Phantom: Cover Ops. Their reputation for crafting high-quality VR experiences remains strong, even as they shift focus.
