The Minecraft movie just keeps gathering steam, raking in another impressive $80 million during its second weekend in U.S. theaters. And that doesn’t even count the ticket sales from eager audiences worldwide, who are snapping them up faster than popcorn!
Variety reports that despite being in its second weekend, the movie is still holding onto the top spot at the box office. Sure, $80 million is a dip from the whopping $163 million opening, reflecting about a 50% drop. But don’t be too quick to judge—such a decrease is pretty standard for new releases. Historically, losing 50% of an opening weekend’s income isn’t as alarming as it sounds.
PBS Frontline points out that ideally, a film should see only a 30-40% drop after its first week to be considered a smash hit. While the Minecraft movie’s figures slightly exceed that, its record-breaking debut already secures its commercial success.
The film’s popularity is so immense that it’s sparked an increase in people playing Minecraft! On top of that, screenings are being flooded with kids and teens shouting “Chicken Jockey,” proving the movie has carved out a niche in the cultural zeitgeist.
With such a triumphant run, it’s no wonder there are talks of a sequel. Minecraft’s robust presence in multimedia clearly isn’t fading anytime soon.
