Current goal: Face Godzilla, and survive!
My relationship with Fortnite has evolved in some surprising ways recently. I remember its first year fondly—a time when each match was a chaotic dance of unexpected encounters, as players with varying skills collided in a thrilling mix of unpredictability and humor. Now, though, that excitement seems like a distant memory. The game has replaced those genuine clashes with sessions where bots form the bulk of opponents, offering only a faint imitation of real battles. The once-enigmatic story that hinted at deeper mysteries is now straightforward, dominated by standard quests and talkative characters revealing well-trodden game lore. Even more characters from popular franchises seem to flood the shop, stripping Fortnite of whatever unique charm it once had, turning it into something akin to a Ready Player One-like corporate universe.
Still, there’s something about Fortnite that continues to reel me in. The game retains a tactile feel where every leap, slide, and sprint across its landscapes feels natural and satisfying. On challenging days, I find solace in logging in to knock out a few daily quests, securing a slice of easy XP. It’s an activity that offers a brief escape. And let’s not forget the spectacle—those moments when Fortnite pulls off something spectacular that few other games could manage. Take right now, for instance: each match brings the possibility of Godzilla, the legendary monster, making an appearance. I’ve seen clips where players assume the role of this gigantic creature, and it looks as thrilling as it ought to—the size and power are spot on. I have a feeling this weekend will see me diving into more Fortnite than usual, all in the hope of experiencing this colossal force from the perspective of a fragile human, desperately running for safety. So, if you’re in Fortnite’s world this weekend and happen to become Godzilla, please spare me if you spot my tiny avatar darting around beneath you. I promise, I’m just there for the view! — Carolyn Petit
