Metroid Prime 4 is one of the most anticipated games set to release this year, yet it appears Amazon has begun cancelling some pre-orders.
Can you believe it? Later this year will mark eight years since Metroid Prime 4 was first announced, and six years since the development was restarted at Retro Studios. Last June, Nintendo finally reintroduced the game, adding “Beyond” as a subtitle and showcasing some gameplay for the first time. Despite the lengthy wait, many of you may have held onto your pre-orders since that initial announcement. However, if you placed your order through Amazon, it might be a good idea to verify its status. Numerous online reports indicate that some pre-orders are being cancelled.
A discussion on the Metroid subreddit revealed that many commenters encountered similar cancellations for their Amazon pre-orders, often with pre-order discounts that were applied. Given that Amazon isn’t known for offering these kinds of deals on video game pre-orders anymore, it’s not entirely surprising they’d retract such offers. Additionally, there’s the possibility that Metroid Prime 4 could be priced similarly to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which launched at $70.
Over on Resetera, one user shared an email from Amazon stating that their order was cancelled due to “a lack of availability.” This sparked some humorously speculative—if not slightly serious—suggestions that Metroid Prime 4 might end up being a Switch 2 exclusive. However, considering Breath of the Wild was also released on the Wii U, such a move from Nintendo would indeed be unexpected. Not to mention, Nintendo recently released a lineup of games slated for the Nintendo Switch into 2025, making a sudden platform shift seem unlikely—and somewhat out of character. While it’s undeniably frustrating for those who had a discount, one option might be to skip Amazon for this purchase. Let’s see how it all unfolds!
