Back in 2021 on Polygon, we first got a glimpse of Auroboros: Coils of the Serpent. Born from Metzen’s creative sessions in his basement during the 1980s, this game has a rugged charm. One of the aspects that truly stands out to me is the role of bards, who have their own festival reminiscent of Burning Man to showcase their skills. However, the real magic of the game lies in its mystical tattoos, which fuel the unique magic system.
Metzen explained, “The Auroboros is like an ancient creative force. It’s intriguing because the more you tap into it, the more you step beyond the abilities defined by your class, leading to chaos and even death. It’s a bit like the intense lifestyle of a rock star, akin to Jim Morrison’s wild energy.”
Though it seems Metzen’s company, Warchief Gaming, is on a bit of a hiatus—their website is currently down—we’ve heard that some of the initial products from the line are still available for purchase on Amazon. If this piques your interest, you might want to check out Auroboros: Coils of the Serpent – Worldbook: Lawbrand, which is a comprehensive guide to the setting. Plus, there’s a novel called Auroboros: Under the Sun, where Metzen himself contributes as one of the narrators.
