Unlike its predecessor Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the upcoming game Rebirth won’t be seeing any DLC releases. This isn’t just an arbitrary decision by the director; there’s a well-thought-out reason behind it.
After the launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, many fans expected that downloadable content would be announced, much like what happened with Remake while waiting for its sequel. But director Naoki Hamaguchi has put those speculations to rest. In a recent chat with the Daily Star, he shared that, no, there won’t be any additional content coming, but he was more than willing to explain the reasoning. “We definitely hear those fans asking for DLC,” Hamaguchi noted. “I get it, truly. However, from my point of view, what fans are really eager to see is the next installment in the series, rather than DLC. They want us to deliver that third part as soon as possible.”
He continued, “That’s why we’re committing our development resources fully to the third game instead of diverting them for additional episodes right now. We’re entirely focused on expediting that process.” It’s a valid point!
Previously, the Yuffie DLC in Remake served as a nice bridge between titles. Fans might expect similar solo journeys for characters like Cid or Vincent Valentine from Rebirth. But there’s some uncertainty about how those would pan out. With Vincent, there’s always the possibility that Square Enix might consider remastering Dirge of Cerberus, making it akin to Crisis Core: Reunion. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for those hoping for Vincent’s solo adventure!
Earlier this week, our colleague Dom caught up with Hamaguchi as well, discussing his ideas for mini-games in the trilogy’s final episode. Rest easy, fans, because he does plan on making some changes there.
