Christopher Nolan is setting his sights on a new epic with his upcoming film, The Odyssey, and it seems part of it will be filmed just where Homer might have imagined it.
Imagine pulling Homer from the 8th century BCE and dropping him into today’s world. Chances are, he’d be shell-shocked, possibly beyond recovery. But let’s say, by some miracle, he pulls through; he’d likely be thrilled to know that Nolan is bringing his iconic poem, The Odyssey, to the big screen. According to Variety, Nolan plans to shoot sections of the film in Sicily, particularly on Favignana Island, colloquially known as “goat island”. Legend has it that this could be the very place where Odysseus and his men made a pit stop for supplies.
However, Sicily won’t be the film’s only location—Variety mentions that filming might extend to the Eolian Islands as well, although Favignana seems to be the focal point. And let’s not forget about other scenic spots like the UK and Morocco, ensuring Nolan’s team gets plenty of sunshine on this globe-trotting adventure.
Nolan’s project is already drawing a stellar lineup. Returning collaborators like Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, and Anne Hathaway are on board. Meanwhile, Jon Bernthal, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron are joining him for the first time, adding fresh faces to his ensemble.
We won’t have to wait too long to witness Nolan’s vision, with the film slated for a July 2026 release. Given his knack for drawing audiences even with epic historical narratives like Oppenheimer, The Odyssey offers Nolan another chance to prove his storytelling prowess—and there’s little doubt that he’ll succeed.
