Dead Space holds a special place in the hearts of horror game enthusiasts. The recent remake of this classic hit an emotional chord, sparking whispers of EA possibly considering a new installment. Hopes were dashed, though, when the pitch for Dead Space 4 didn’t quite land with EA.
Earlier this year, Glen Schofield, Bret Robbins, and Christopher Stone—the original minds behind Dead Space—shared their experience in a chat with Dan Allen Gaming. They had approached EA with the idea for Dead Space 4, but their proposal didn’t gain much traction and was shelved rather swiftly.
Reflecting on the situation, Schofield explained, “We didn’t dive too deep. The response was a simple, ‘Thanks, but we’re not interested right now.’ We know who to reach out to, so we opted not to push further, respecting their position. They understand their business figures and operational needs better than anyone.”
Stone pointed to the broader gaming industry climate as a possible factor in EA’s decision, noting, “The industry is quite unpredictable at the moment. There’s a lot of caution around investing in new ventures. While we have to accept their decision, who knows? Maybe the opportunity will arise one day. I think all of us would be thrilled to revisit the series.”
The remake of Dead Space hit the shelves in January 2023, and it was well-received, securing an impressive 89 metascore on Metacritic. Our own Jason Faulkner praised it with a 9 out of 10. Nonetheless, despite the glowing reviews, it fell short of EA’s sales forecasts.
Reports circulated earlier this year hinting at the development of Dead Space 4 or a potential remake of Dead Space 2 by Motive. However, due to the remake’s underwhelming sales performance, these projects were eventually put on ice.
