As we all eagerly await the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation scheduled for April, having had enough time to digest the console’s official reveal, there are some important developments to keep in mind for both current and potential Switch owners.
Recently, Nintendo disclosed updates about its Switch Game Vouchers and eShop Gold Points plans. Notably, you won’t be able to earn Gold Points after March 25.
Let’s dive into the changes regarding Gold Points first, especially if you’ve amassed a considerable collection by purchasing numerous eShop games over the years. The short of it is, Gold Points are being phased out.
According to a Nintendo blog post explaining the changes, “Starting March 25, 2025, customers will no longer be able to earn Gold Points from digital purchases through the Nintendo eShop, the official Nintendo website, or by redeeming download codes.” Interestingly, the post clarified that if you pre-order a digital title from the Nintendo eShop or the official website by March 24, 2025, you will still receive Gold Points, even if the game releases later and the payment processes after that date.
On a similar note, the post mentioned, “Gold Points can still be obtained by registering physical Game Cards on your Nintendo Switch console’s HOME Menu, provided the title has been released by March 24, 2025. For titles released after this date, earning Gold Points will not be possible.” The silver lining is that you’ll have a full year to redeem unused Gold Points before they expire, as they’ll remain valid for 12 months from when you earn them, even as the program winds down.
Now, moving on to the Switch Game Vouchers. These allow players to purchase two Switch games at a discounted rate. A recent update on Nintendo’s website states, “Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers cannot be used to redeem exclusive titles for the Nintendo Switch 2.”
