There’s been an exciting buzz around the potential features of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. It seems these new Joy-Cons might just double as computer mice, adding an interesting twist to how controllers can be used. The idea, while not entirely new, builds on Nintendo’s reputation for playful innovation.
This juicy tidbit surfaced thanks to a keen-eyed user on Famiboards, LiC, who stumbled upon some intriguing details while analyzing Vietnamese customs data. This data is believed to be linked to one of Nintendo’s parts suppliers and has been the springboard for a wealth of Switch 2 rumors since news broke in mid-2024. Discovering mentions of polyethylene adhesive tape, commonly used for creating ‘mouse soles’ on mice—which could serve as the base for mouse functionality on devices—suggests a new horizon for console controllers.
In early January 2025, LiC delivered another nugget of information when this adhesive tape, described explicitly for sticking ‘to game console handles,’ was revealed. The term ‘mouse soles’ usually refers to the base of a computer mouse, igniting talk about mouse-like functionality in the Joy-Cons for the anticipated console.
Further details from LiC revealed references to specific model numbers—LG7 and SML7—for these so-called ‘mouse soles.’ Unable to find these in existing databases, it seems Nintendo is gearing up to launch something entirely new. Each piece of this mysterious tape, allegedly measuring 90 x 90mm, seems designed to cover the Joy-Cons in their entirety, with slight adjustments expected for a perfect fit.
If this feature comes to fruition, Switch 2 will join the ranks of the Lenovo Legion GO, which similarly allowed its right controller to be used as a mouse. Lenovo added a nifty circular plastic part to enhance the controller’s glide, showing how console interaction could seamlessly blend with traditional PC functionalities.
Not only does Lenovo’s 2024 design resemble these rumors, featuring magnetic rails for detachable controllers, it also gives us a glimpse of what Nintendo might be cooking up with its second hybrid console. As more whispers surface, it will be fascinating to see how these innovations shape the gaming landscape once the Switch 2 is officially revealed.
