Maki: Paw of Fury by RedDeerGames and Bacord throws you back into the vibrant world of the 90s arcade era, delivering a beat ‘em up experience infused with nostalgia and furry charm. In this action-packed homage, set in the captivating world of Pangea, players embark on a thrilling journey. Our adventure kicks off as Maki, the brave protagonist, leaps into action after a dear friend is captured. With courage and fighting skills honed by the power of the Tsume no Ken, Maki is on a daring mission to face the forces of evil. In an unexpected twist, his friend Mapu turns foe by abducting Kami!
Joining this mission are two dynamic companions: Tincho, the capybara, and Maka, the otter. Each character offers a unique fighting style with their own set of attacks, including special and area strikes. It’s definitely worth experimenting with all three to discover which fighter’s style aligns with your own tactical preferences.
As you take control of your chosen hero, you’ll navigate with the left analog stick. Attack with the Y button for standard punches and kicks, while unleashing special moves with the B button. String together these attacks, and you’ll unleash powerful combos. For those aerial attacks, combine the jump (A button) with Y or B. An area attack is within reach by simultaneously pressing Y and B, and don’t forget the devastating Breaker maneuver with X, though be mindful—it taps into your Mana reserve.
While diving into this adventure, it’s hard to ignore some missed opportunities. It would have been thrilling to see a co-op feature on the Nintendo Switch, taking advantage of its dual-player capabilities. The absence of HD rumble support feels like a misstep, and relying solely on the left analog stick for movement raises some eyebrows. Maki: Paw of Fury is available now on the Nintendo Switch, priced at $10.99.
