Major spoilers ahead for Final Fantasy VII!
Recently, a noteworthy update rolled out for the Nintendo Switch version of the beloved PS1 JRPG, Final Fantasy VII. This update finally lifts the restriction on capturing screenshots and video during select pivotal scenes in the game.
On the Switch, gamers can easily press the capture button on their controllers to snap screenshots or record short video clips—up to 30 seconds—to store and share on social media or transfer to a mobile device.
But the experience isn’t uniform across all titles. Some games, like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, don’t support video capture at all. Others, like Persona 5 Royal, set limits, blocking both screenshots and video at specific story junctures.
Final Fantasy VII initially joined this latter group with such restrictions. A notable scene where this came into play was during a part notorious enough to be almost common knowledge:
Yes, it’s that moment when Aerith loses her life at the hands of Sephiroth. Her tragic demise is a crucial turning point that propels Cloud and his team into the second disc’s adventures, now missing their beloved ally.
Initially, screen captures during all scenes surrounding her death, marking the end of Disc 1, were blocked. However, with the advent of version 1.03, this restriction has been dropped.
Interestingly, this change isn’t exclusive to the Switch. Similar limitations on other platforms have also been loosened.
The motivation behind these changes might be linked to the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth earlier this year, though official details have been sparse.
