NVIDIA has recently shed some light on their collaboration with Nintendo to develop a special processor for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. They proudly claim that this new system will boast graphics capabilities that are “tenfold what the original Nintendo Switch offers.”
The heart of this new console is a NVIDIA GPU, equipped with state-of-the-art RT Cores and Tensor Cores. These are designed to deliver visually impressive graphics and innovative AI-driven enhancements. While the Tensor Cores help elevate graphics with AI without draining too much power, the RT Cores work to improve in-game realism by offering dynamic lighting and natural reflecting surfaces.
For those who prefer gaming on the go, the handheld experience promises to be seamless, thanks to NVIDIA G-SYNC technology. This feature ensures that you enjoy gameplay that’s both smooth and free from tearing by supporting a variable refresh rate.
A recent blog post from the company highlighted the massive effort behind this development: “With a thousand years’ worth of engineering efforts invested into every component—from the system and chip design to crafting a bespoke GPU, APIs, and top-tier development tools—the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to deliver significant enhancements.”
The anticipated console is set to support impressive capabilities, such as 4K gaming when connected to a TV and up to 120 frames per second at 1080p when in handheld mode. Additional features like high dynamic range and AI upscaling further enhance visuals and ensure smoother gameplay experiences.
NVIDIA elaborated further on the innovations: “The next-generation RT Cores bring real-time ray tracing, offering lifelike lighting, reflections, and shadows to create more engaging gaming environments.”
Moreover, the Tensor Cores are no slouches, driving AI functions like Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS). This technology increases resolution, providing sharper image details without compromising on quality. Beyond just graphics, these Tensor Cores also facilitate AI-powered face tracking and background removal in video chats, enhancing the social and streaming aspects of gaming.
Mark your calendars because the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to hit stores globally on June 5, 2025, with a price tag of £395.99 in the UK or $449.99 in the US.
