The long-awaited remastered edition of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion has finally hit the shelves. Fans of Bethesda’s classic game, which is nearing its 20th anniversary, can look forward to an updated experience that refreshes both the visuals and some gameplay mechanics. Yet, the quirky charm that made the original game so beloved remains intact. Yes, those memorable NPC voice lines are as delightful as ever.
Tom Mustaine, Director at Bethesda Game Studios, gave us a peek into the remaster’s new features during the unveiling on April 22. Holding up an old Xbox 360 copy, he explained the limitations developers faced back in the day. “We were constrained by disc space, which meant not every race could have unique voiceovers,” he said. The remastered version addresses this, adding fresh dialogues and ensuring each race is uniquely voiced. Of course, they’ve preserved all the wonderfully odd lines fans enjoyed back then.
Bethesda and Virtuos, the studio behind Oblivion Remastered, shared several examples of these quirky lines. Fans will be delighted to hear that familiar outburst from Sheogorath, the beloved mad god from the Shivering Isles expansion. During the remaster’s launch stream, voice actor Wes Johnson—who brilliantly voiced Sheogorath, the stealthy Lucien Lachance, and multiple NPCs—joined us with his adorable puppy. While you’re itching to return to Cyrodiil, don’t miss out on the stream; it’s a perfect way to pass the time while your game downloads.
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is now playable on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. If you’re subscribed to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, you’re in luck—it’s included in the library!
