Pixelity, a forward-thinking game development studio based in Korea, is diving into the realm of XR gaming with an exciting new project. They’re delving into the beloved ’90s anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and bringing it to life in a whole new way.
In a recent blog post, Pixelity shared that they’ve secured an official licensing deal with Japan’s renowned Studio Khara. This agreement sets the stage for what promises to be an ambitious gaming experience spread across three distinct parts. Drawing from the rich narrative of all 26 episodes of the anime, the studio is already hard at work on the first part, aiming to launch it in 2026.
For the seasoned Evangelion aficionados among us, the significance of this anime can’t be overstated. It was a groundbreaking moment in the ’90s that helped reenergize anime as a genre in Japan and left a lasting impact on numerous future productions.
The story of Neon Genesis Evangelion transports us to the year 2015—years ahead of its original 1995 debut. It trails the journey of Shinji Ikari, a young protagonist tapped to pilot the Evangelion, a crucial combat weapon deployed to safeguard Tokyo-3, a city besieged by enigmatic beings known as Angels.
While Pixelity has yet to disclose which platforms the game will support, they have teased that players can look forward to an engaging XR experience. Through this, they’ll navigate iconic locations, relive the timeline of the series, undertake missions, and immerse themselves in thrilling battles.
What’s perhaps most intriguing is Pixelity’s plan to integrate collaborative gameplay elements. These features will enable interactions with familiar characters from the Evangelion universe—a definite crowd-pleaser for die-hard fans. The aim is to deliver an action-adventure experience pulsating with energy and depth.
Pixelity, established in 2017, is no stranger to crafting engaging VR games. Their portfolio already includes titles like Puttzzle (2023), Crazyworld VR (2022), and Rise of the Fallen (2018). Plus, they’re currently developing two additional VR projects: The Patcher and Teahouse of Souls.
This upcoming Evangelion project marks a significant milestone—it will be the series’ first official at-home game. Previously, in 2017, a VR adaptation called Evangelion VR: The Throne of Souls, created by Bandai Namco-backed Project i Can, was available at VR ZONE in Shinjuku, Japan, but only for a limited stint.
In merging one of anime’s legendary series with modern XR capabilities, Pixelity is setting the stage for an experience that both honors the past and embraces the future.
