Phasmophobia, the hit co-op ghost hunting game, has been a sensation on Twitch ever since its release in 2020. Recently, the developers at Kinetic Games revealed that the game has surpassed 22 million copies sold. Looking ahead to 2025, the team has a busy development schedule lined up, featuring a makeover for the game’s notably plain player character models. Here’s a sneak peek at the updates and enhancements coming later this year, as outlined in their latest press release.
The first significant update on the horizon is the Chronicle update, which was detailed in an earlier developer blog post. Kinetic Games plans to shake up how players gather evidence, such as chilly spectral temperature drops and spine-tingling sounds, by creating an archive for the first time. This update will swap out the Photos tab with a new Media tab, offering players a chance to capture and store their ghost-hunting exploits. This feature should prove invaluable, especially if your team tends to get a bit chaotic during intense ghost encounters, with friends screaming or arguing in the background.
The developers also hinted at a more nuanced approach to collecting data. Every first capture of a media type will be labeled as Unique, bringing in substantial rewards once a contract wraps up. Meanwhile, duplicate media will yield lesser rewards, encouraging players to diversify their toolkit and gather a broader range of evidence.
Following the Chronicle update, there’s the Player Character Overhaul to look forward to. Right now, players are limited to picking from a few generic avatars that lack much flair. The upcoming changes will seemingly allow for more personalization, like different shirt options, suggesting players might soon have the freedom to mix and match outfits between ghost-hunting gigs. This is a refreshing shift from the current lineup of basic, forgettable button-downs and modest attire.
Later in the year, Kinetic will roll out a brand-new map, described as a small-scale location similar to the existing houses. They also plan to revamp some of the current maps, namely the Bleasdale and Grafton Farmhouses, which will receive substantial updates, including redesigned layouts and fresh rooms for specters to lurk in. Additionally, there are hints of festive updates for Easter and Halloween, and the roadmap even teases some 2026 features, including an intriguing project dubbed “Horror 2.0” that has certainly caught my curiosity.
