Devolver Digital and Croteam have rekindled the magic of The Talos Principle with a fresh revamp now available on the PlayStation 5. In this updated version, we’re treated to a visually stunning remake that presents the classic’s essence with a modern twist. Moving away from the Serious Engine 4 of the original, this edition embraces Unreal Engine 5, delivering a substantial visual upgrade. The improvements in lighting and texture are awe-inspiring, and all of these enhancements elevate the presentation significantly. Additionally, this version includes the base game, the Road to Gehenna DLC, and introduces a new chapter entitled "In the Beginning," providing a comprehensive package for old fans and newcomers alike.
Back in 2015, I had the pleasure of delving into the enchanting world of The Talos Principle on the PlayStation 4. The original game, with its intriguing puzzles that made use of Tetromino elements, left a lasting impression. Fast forward to 2023, and I was eager to experience the sequel, The Talos Principle 2, on PlayStation 5. That year, despite tough competition from the exceptional The Making of Karateka, it secured a spot among my top picks. Following up on that, I also explored The Talos Principle 2: Road to Elysium DLC in 2024. So now, as we enjoy 2025, it feels like the perfect time to return to the game’s roots, this time on the PlayStation 5.
As you dive into the game, you’ll take charge of your character, using the left analog stick to move and the right to survey your surroundings for the best vantage point to tackle the intricate puzzles ahead. Zooming in is a breeze with the right stick, while R1 lets you sprint. Jumping is mapped to the X button, and the L2 button becomes your tool for interacting with the world, allowing you to manipulate cubes, activate switches, and more. The game gradually introduces new gameplay elements to keep the experience fresh and engaging as you immerse yourself in countless hours of puzzling fun.
An unexpected detail with this iteration is the absence of a Platinum trophy, which is rather surprising considering the original PlayStation 4 version had one. Even though the new trophy list is more extensive, clocking in at 44 Bronze, 2 Silver, and 2 Gold trophies, trophy hunters might find themselves missing that sense of ultimate accomplishment.
The refreshed trophy objectives reflect the game’s new dimensions, with intriguing challenges like the LOL trophy for existential humor, Thrice Holy for connecting with Elohim’s messengers, and more unique tasks within the Road to Gehenna and the new chapter. Don’t forget the trophies exclusive to "In the Beginning," adding another layer of challenge to this enhanced adventure.
The Talos Principle: Reawakened thrives on the PlayStation 5, offering a polished experience with updated graphics and refined gameplay. With Croteam’s transition to Unreal Engine 5, the game’s visual appeal reaches new heights, bringing vibrant environments to life. Alongside these technical upgrades, the game introduces features that align it with the standards of its sequel, ensuring a seamless experience for both sections.
For those curious about the creative process, Developer Commentaries offer behind-the-scenes insights, accessible through the game’s settings. Whether revisiting the original masterpiece or experiencing it for the first time, players can expect at least 25 to 30 hours of rich gameplay encompassing the main game, DLC, and the new chapter. Are you ready to embark on this journey? The Talos Principle: Reawakened is available starting today on PlayStation 5.
