Sony is facing criticism from PS Plus users over its policy of restricting discount offers to new or expired members only. This has been a longstanding issue, as those with active subscriptions miss out on renewal discounts whenever a sale is on. The latest PS Plus promotion is no different.
PS Plus members recently expressed frustration regarding Sony’s five-day extension offer, which was meant to compensate for February’s major PSN outage. The catch here is that Sony’s policy excludes renewals from enjoying discounts, leaving many members disgruntled.
Notably, PS Plus offers significant discounts during Black Friday, a time when many aim to extend their subscriptions. Unfortunately, due to the five-day extension, some subscriptions will expire after the discount period ends, effectively barring these users from accessing the annual sale in 2025. It seems quite unreasonable, and many agree it feels slightly unfair.
One player vented on Reddit, sharing their disappointment, “PlayStation is telling me I can’t take advantage of the 35% off 12-month Premium sale because I was already a subscriber. This seems completely unfair.” Another chimed in, remarking, “Wild that they offer absolutely nothing for loyalty.” Attempts to resolve such concerns with PlayStation Support have reportedly been unsuccessful.
It’s common for businesses to prioritize luring in new and returning patrons, so Sony’s approach isn’t out of the ordinary. However, this policy appears counterproductive, as players are cancelling their memberships to capitalize on discounts instead of simply renewing.
Providing a separate, enticing offer for renewals might be a wiser strategy. Ignoring this key section of their customer base could mean missing an opportunity to strengthen subscriber loyalty.
