Rec Room, the engaging social VR platform, offers a lively mix of first-party adventures perfect for teaming up with friends or joining random players. Their latest exciting addition, ‘Run the Block’, draws inspiration from the nostalgic Dreamcast classic, Jet Set Radio from 2000.
Launched on December 11th, ‘Run the Block’ quickly gained momentum and has already seen over one million players dive into the action. This fun, free multiplayer mini-game invites you to compete against up to nine others, challenging you to race and parkour through a vibrant cityscape.
Although it skips the aggressive rollerblades iconic to Jet Set Radio, you’ll still find yourself sprinting, leaping, and grinding along expansive rails crisscrossing the map. The urban environment is filled with graffiti, providing plenty of opportunities to leave your mark with your own tags.
Compared to previous years, Rec Room has scaled back on releasing first-party games. Their most significant venture recently was the pet farming sim, ‘My Little Monster’. However, the year has seen a strong focus on expanding branded content, including avatar packs from the ‘Monster High’ series and Bungie’s popular shooter, Destiny.
Rec Room appears dedicated to enhancing its creator suite, empowering users to design intricate worlds and create assets to sell within the game’s creator economy. Noteworthy updates this year included the introduction of full-body avatars, expanding the customization options for players.
Recently, Rec Room also made a splash on the Nintendo Switch in November, adding to its extensive list of supported platforms like PC VR, all Quest devices, the original PSVR, iOS, Android, Pico, Xbox, and PlayStation—offering players a wide range of ways to dive into its vibrant universe.
