Indie publisher Reforged Studios has recently announced its third acquisition this year with the addition of Yellow Lab Games to its portfolio.
While the details of the financial transaction remain undisclosed, it has been confirmed, according to GI.biz, that Yellow Lab Games will maintain its independence. The South African studio is currently working on Metavoidal, a roguelite RPG, which is slated for a Steam release in the first quarter of 2025.
This acquisition follows closely behind Reforged’s previous purchases of Ground Shatter and Extra Mile Studios last August.
Reflecting on the deal, Reforged CEO and founder Peter Van Der Watt shared his personal connection to the region, “Growing up in South Africa, I’ve always been aware of the incredible game development talent the country hosts. Yellow Lab Games has been on my radar for quite a while, especially after seeing the positive buzz around Metavoidal, their initial jump into PC and console gaming.”
Van Der Watt further expressed his commitment to uplifting South African game development, saying, “Since I moved to Scotland to establish my first game studio in 2011, I’ve advocated for South African game developers on a global scale. Today, Reforged’s entire board shares my enthusiasm for the potential in the region. So when the chance came to bring [Yellow Lab’s head of studios] David Hecker and his team into our fold, it was an easy decision. We’re thrilled to incorporate South Africa’s top talent into Reforged and see this as just the beginning of expanded investment in Africa’s rising gaming industry.”
