Ubisoft, the well-known French game publisher, is reportedly working on a new battle royale game that aims to compete directly with Apex Legends.
According to Insider Gaming, this new project, which goes by the codename “Scout,” bears a striking resemblance to Respawn and EA’s popular game. At one point, its concept art was even used as a thumbnail for the project. It seems some of the characters also share similarities with those from Apex Legends. It’s clear that this game has been in development for quite some time.
The motivation behind this seems to be Ubisoft’s belief that they can lure players away from Apex Legends. This particular game has witnessed a financial slump recently, as admitted by its publisher, Electronic Arts. A source mentioned, “The goal seems to be to take advantage of Apex’s dwindling player numbers, with Ubisoft’s executives believing there’s now room for a new hero Battle Royale in the market.”
This isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt at entering the free-to-play battle royale arena. Back in 2020, they launched Hyperscape, although it didn’t last long, folding just a year and a half later. Recently, Ubisoft also decided to shut down their free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, by the end of 2024.
Meanwhile, fans of Apex Legends have some hope to cling to, as an enhanced version, dubbed Apex Legends 2.0, is reportedly in the pipeline and expected to launch sometime after April 2026.
