Snap, the company known for Snapchat, is making waves with its newest move: making their latest Spectacles AR Glasses more accessible to the educational crowd. They’ve introduced a special discount that slashes the original $1,200 price tag right down the middle for students and teachers.
These fifth-generation Spectacles, dubbed Spectacles ’24, hit the scene back in September 2024. While these glasses are primarily aimed at developers, they come with a subscription model of $100 per month if you commit for a year. However, despite significant upgrades from the fourth-gen model launched in 2021—like a larger field-of-view, improved resolution, hand-tracking, and a revamped software suite—the steep cost has been a roadblock for students and educators interested in diving into AR app development.
Snap doesn’t want cost to be a barrier, so they’ve rolled out an enticing student discount. This deal cuts the monthly fee in half, now at $49.50 a month, provided you commit to at least 12 months. After the initial term, the same monthly fee continues. Alternatively, there’s an option to make a one-time payment of $594 for the first year, followed by the same monthly rate moving forward.
