Today, Sony took a bold step in making virtual reality more accessible by announcing that the price of the PSVR 2 will be permanently reduced to $400 starting next month. This price drop is significant, considering the headset initially hit the market two years ago at a steeper $550. The news arrives quietly, without much celebration during the recent two-year anniversary or mention in Sony’s State of Play event a couple of weeks back. However, from March onwards, gamers can snag the PSVR 2 headset for $400 in the U.S., €450 in Europe, £400 in the U.K., and ¥66,980 in Japan.
This new pricing isn’t just limited to the basic package, which includes the headset, Sense controllers, and headphones. The Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle, which originally started at $600 when the device was launched in February 2023, will also see the price cut to $400.
Sony had previously tempted shoppers with discounts that went even lower than the forthcoming March price, especially notable during a sale last November when the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle was knocked down to $350. Such promotions suggest that savvy buyers might still discover even better deals in the future.
In its price reduction announcement, Sony spotlighted a variety of high-quality PSVR 2 games. Titles like Skydance’s Behemoth, Metro Awakening VR, and Alien: Rogue Incursion form part of the console’s lineup. Upcoming releases such as Aces of Thunder, Dreams of Another, Hitman World of Assassination, and The Midnight Walk were also highlighted. However, there’s a sense of ambivalence in Sony’s support for the PSVR 2—it pales compared to its commitment during the 2016 launch of the original PSVR, which boasted titles like Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Blood & Truth.
Sony has indeed launched a few first-party titles for the PSVR 2, like Horizon Call of the Mountain and VR modes for Gran Turismo 7 and the Resident Evil franchise. In August, they gave users the option to expand their VR experience to PC gaming with a $60 PC Adapter, enabling games from the SteamVR platform like Half-Life: Alyx and Fallout 4 VR. Nonetheless, this step might just signal the beginning of a broader strategy to gradually pull PSVR 2 away from being solely tied to the PS5.
Looking ahead, continuous price drops could entice more PS5 users to explore VR gaming, strengthening year-over-year sales. The bustling third-party game ecosystem ensures a robust library of games, both old and new. If another deep discount of around 42% occurs, as seen during Black Friday, the headset price could plummet to $232, making it an enticing holiday gift option.
Just a quick note on our February 27th, 2025 update: We corrected the European pricing to €450, which was previously misstated as €550.
