Sony has been pretty quiet about their SRH-S1 standalone MR headset ever since it was unveiled at CES 2024. However, the wait for more details is finally over as the company has officially announced the launch date and price for this enterprise-focused device.
Teaming up with Siemens, Sony is gearing up to release the SRH-S1 in February 2025. Priced at $4,750, this headset is clearly targeting the enterprise market. Interested buyers can place their orders starting January 23rd, 2025, exclusively through Siemens.
Last year, the headset was initially pitched to appeal to creatives, but it’s now evident that Sony and Siemens are directing their efforts toward industrial applications. The duo claims that the SRH-S1 will help “enable the industrial metaverse,” enhancing everything from product design to manufacturing processes, thanks to Siemens’ suite of advanced mixed reality tools.
The SRH-S1 is equipped with some impressive specs, featuring a 13.6MP (3,552 × 3840) resolution per eye through Sony’s ECX344A OLED microdisplay and powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset. Additionally, Sony boasts of a “proprietary rendering technology” for real-time 3D object rendering, quite a feature for those needing high-quality visuals.
In the realm of mixed reality, this device includes passthrough video capabilities, a convenient flip-up visor, and a pair of uniquely ergonomic controllers. These controllers, which resemble a stylus and a ring, are designed to provide intuitive 3D interactions.
Over the past year, Siemens has been busy enhancing its collection of enterprise-centric Immersive Engineering tools. With the SRH-S1, users can now design 3D assets using CAD, engage with models, and even conduct remote, multi-user design reviews via Siemens’ cloud-based NX X platform.
Reflecting on the journey so far, Bob Haubrock, the Senior VP of Product Engineering Software at Siemens Digital Industries Software, stated, “After showcasing the headset at CES last year, our teams have developed tools that revolutionize the use of mixed reality in engineering. It fosters global collaboration with precision 3D models and enables co-creation directly on essential 3D CAD data in a secure environment.”
In other news from CES, Sony also announced a creative-focused headset meant for prosumers, dubbed XYN. As of now, no pricing or release date has been revealed for the XYN, which is still believed to be a prototype. The XYN is suspected to be a variation of the SRH-S1, discernible by its black color as opposed to the SRH-S1’s grey design.
