If you thought Stardew Valley was just another popular game, think again—it has reached a milestone that speaks volumes about its success. This hugely loved farming simulation has become a household name. Even if you’re not a player, you’ve likely come across its name. Given its genre, it’s easy to assume its popularity is moderate, yet the truth is that it has achieved extraordinary success. Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, the brain behind Stardew Valley, recently updated the figures on the game’s official website, revealing that by December 2024, the game sold over 41 million copies across all platforms. Breaking that down further, over 26 million copies were sold for PC users, while Nintendo Switch fans snapped up 7.9 million copies.
Let’s take a moment to consider what those numbers mean. When ranking the best-selling games of all time, Stardew Valley comfortably lands in the 15th position. It’s a close race with Wii Fit, which is just a few million copies ahead. Meanwhile, it has surpassed some major titles like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Not too shabby for a game that started as an indie passion project. To add to the excitement, nearly 11 million copies flew off the shelves in under a year, with Barone having already shared in February of the previous year that sales had exceeded 30 million.
This year also marked a new chapter with the release of update 1.6. And while fans eagerly await Barone’s next venture, Haunted Chocolatier, announced three years prior, there’s no cause for concern. Barone reassured fans last month that progress on the much-anticipated game is underway. Given how well Stardew Valley continues to perform, there’s no pressing need to hurry its release.
