This past Sunday was the Super Bowl, and Marvel took the opportunity to roll out a new trailer for their upcoming Thunderbolts movie, making it clear they’re sparing no expense to hype up this release.
With only three months left until Thunderbolts hits theaters, the film’s plot remains pretty elusive. Last September, we got a teaser that kept things vague, and now, with this new trailer, we’re getting a bit more, although it doesn’t reveal too much. One of the standout moments is a glimpse of Sentry. Previously rumored to appear in the movie, Sentry is portrayed by Lewis Pullman, who you might have caught as “Bob” in the first trailer—a clever red herring on Marvel’s part.
In the latest teaser, Sentry isn’t heavily featured, but there are a few shots of him showcasing his superpowers against the ragtag bunch of anti-heroes and some unsuspecting bystanders. It’s certainly indicative of his character unless, of course, Marvel is pulling the wool over our eyes and introducing an entirely different antagonist—a plausible enough twist, given that Sentry is a hero in the comics who battles his own nemesis, the Void. The shadow-laden scenes in the trailer suggest that the Void might not be far off, especially since a few of the cast members haven’t had their roles disclosed yet.
For a bit more context, the official movie logline reads: “Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes—Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and John Walker (Wyatt Russell). After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that forces them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite as something much more before it’s too late?”
There’s still not a whole lot to dissect, but it won’t be long before we have all the answers. Thunderbolts lands in cinemas on May 2, so keep an eye out for what promises to be an intriguing addition to the Marvel universe.
